Jatropha, commonly grown ornamental varieties belonging to the genus Jatropha, is a hardy tropical shrub admired for its bright red or pink flower clusters and attractive foliage. It thrives well in Kerala’s warm climate, growing best in temperatures between 20°C to 38°C and tolerating high heat and moderate drought once established. Jatropha prefers full sunlight for profuse flowering and grows well in well-drained sandy or loamy soil, even in slightly poor soils. Moderate watering is sufficient, and waterlogging should be avoided to prevent root damage. In Kerala conditions, it flowers almost throughout the year, especially during warmer months. With minimal maintenance and occasional pruning to shape the plant, Jatropha is ideal for hedges, borders, avenue planting, and ornamental landscaping.
