Chembakam, scientifically known as Magnolia champaca, is a highly fragrant flowering tree cherished in Kerala for its golden-yellow to orange blossoms and cultural significance. It thrives well in Kerala’s warm and humid tropical climate, growing best in temperatures between 20°C to 35°C. Chembakam prefers full sunlight to partial shade and grows best in fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods, but waterlogging should be avoided. In Kerala conditions, it flowers mainly during summer and monsoon seasons, spreading a strong, pleasant fragrance. With proper care and occasional pruning, Chembakam becomes a beautiful shade tree suitable for home gardens, temple premises, and landscaped areas.
