Cardamom, scientifically known as Elettaria cardamomum, is a highly valued spice crop widely cultivated in the hilly regions of Kerala for its aromatic green pods. It thrives best in cool, humid tropical climates with temperatures between 15°C to 30°C and requires well-distributed rainfall along with high humidity. Cardamom prefers partial shade under forest-like conditions and grows best in deep, well-drained, loamy soil rich in organic matter. Regular irrigation is essential during dry spells, while proper drainage must be ensured to prevent waterlogging and root diseases. In Kerala conditions, flowering and capsule formation occur seasonally, with harvesting typically done once the pods mature and turn green. With proper shade management, mulching, and timely fertilization, cardamom becomes a profitable long-term plantation crop suitable for Kerala’s high-range areas.
