Canna Vazha (Indian Shot Plant), botanically known as Canna indica, is a bold tropical ornamental plant widely grown in Kerala gardens for its large banana-like leaves and vibrant red, orange, or yellow flowers. It thrives exceptionally well in Kerala’s warm and humid climate, growing best in temperatures between 20°C to 35°C and tolerating higher heat with regular watering. Canna Vazha prefers full sunlight for healthy growth and profuse flowering, though it can tolerate partial shade. It grows well in fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter, and consistent moisture enhances flowering, but stagnant water should be avoided. In Kerala conditions, it flowers almost throughout the year, especially during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. Easy to maintain and propagated through rhizomes, Canna Vazha is ideal for borders, landscaping, and ornamental garden displays.
