Bougainvillea (scientifically known as Bougainvillea) is a hardy, fast-growing ornamental climber popular in Kerala for its vibrant paper-like bracts that appear in shades of pink, purple, red, orange, white, and yellow. It thrives exceptionally well in Kerala’s warm tropical climate, growing best in temperatures between 20°C to 38°C and tolerating intense summer heat with minimal care. Bougainvillea requires full sunlight for maximum flowering and performs best in well-drained sandy or loamy soil. It is drought-tolerant once established and needs moderate watering, as overwatering and waterlogging can reduce blooms. In Kerala conditions, it flowers heavily during summer and dry periods, with intermittent blooms throughout the year. Regular pruning encourages bushier growth and more flowers, making Bougainvillea ideal for compound walls, arches, pergolas, hedges, and landscape decoration.
