Breeding work to evolve clones having high yield and desirable secondary characters was started by the Rubber Research Institute of India in 1954. This has enabled selection of a few outstanding clones.
Cultivars approved by the Rubber Board and recommended for planting are classified into different clones. The clones approved for large scale planting are RRII 105, PB 260, RRII414 and RRII 430 for the traditional regions and RRIM 600 and GT1 for the non-traditional regions. Short notes on cultivars for the traditional region are listed below:
- RRII 105 : A clone evolved by the RRII and currently enjoying maximum popularity in the country. Parents are Tjir 1 and GI 1.Yield is very good.
- PB260 : A hybrid clone developed by the Prang Besar Estates Ltd. in Malaysia. Parents are PB 5/51 & PB 49. Yield is high.
- RRII 414 : The parents of this clone are RRII 105 & RRIC 100. Yield is high. Incidence of pink disease and abnormal leaf fall are moderate while the clone is relatively tolerant to Corynespora.
- RRII 430 : Parents are RRII 105 & RRIC 100. The clone has above average girth at opening. Yield is high. Incidence of Oidum is very high while incidence of and abnormal leaf fall, pink disease and Corynespora leaf fall are low.
- RRIM 600 : A high yielding clone evolved by the Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia. Parents are Tjir 1 & PB 86. Initial yield above average . Subsequent yield very high
- GT1 : A primary clone developed in Indonesia. This clone shows rising yield trend. Summer yield fairly high.
